Spices on a picture ledge.

This is my first blog post. Ah.

I really didn't know where to start and everyone loves a how to, so I'll give you one.
It's spice storage. Sandeep (husband) and I usually pick up local spices on our travels.

India and Turkey have been our jackpot locations so far, but soon we ended up with cupboards full of bags, tubs and pots.
All of the spice storage I found were either too expensive, didn't hold enough or well, were just ugly.

So we did this:

We bought picture ledges and spice jars from Ikea.

Project cost: $45 for three Ribba ledges and $36 for 9 packages of Rajtan spice jars.

Use a label maker to post the spice name on the back. Tumeric is in my life to stay, but if it wasn't, just change the label. Easy and no commitment.

You can decide the length of ledges depending on your wall space. Try and keep your spices away from any window sunlight and the oven. The light or heat can shorten the lifespan of your powdery goodies.

When we moved to a new apartment our ledges were a little longer than we needed, no prob, we just cut down the extra inches.
The memories and color make our kitchen smile. And it's practical. Love. Here's a few more shots.

  1. Very nice idea....I just had some "Ribba" ledges donated to me, and didn't really know what they were for.....now I do!

  2. Thanks guys. Was looking for inspiration and you provided it!

Just found the most amazing Asian/Chinese supermarket that sells a mind boggling amount of spices and other exotic foodstuff from all over the world. Hence also having a bulging, leaking, spilled cupboard full of open bags!

Just invested in a bunch of Rajtan jars and wanted something different to display them.

    So, thanks again :-)
    Cheers

    1. Hi Ian,

Thank you very much for your comment. It was so cool to get a response from a stranger, and mostly to know that you really benefited from my little post, that I have found my motivation to start this blog again.

Thank you, would love to see a picture of your spice rack!
